Solid research keeps the bank ahead of developments in the market. It allows our traders to formulate robust strategies, and our clients to make informed decisions about their investments.

Research & Strategy provides insights into economics, interest rates, foreign exchange, credit, emerging markets and commodities. There are two main paths in this business area. Research analysts are client-focused and independent from the trading desks; they typically specialise in a sector or product, becoming an expert in that specific area. Strategists, by contrast, cover broader areas and work closely with our trading desks.

GBM also houses a division called Quantitative Solutions. This specialist team uses advanced quantitative models to help clients enhance their investment techniques. They also carry out innovative and topical research, and work on bespoke briefs for our clients.

If you enjoy intellectually rigorous work, this is an excellent career choice. As a researcher, your insights will not only feed into major financial decisions; they will even shape the opinion of entire markets. You will also develop your communication skills. Whether you’re discussing market developments or explaining a new product, you will have frequent contact with our clients.

What we look for
Excellent analytical skills are essential for anyone thinking about a career in Research & Strategy. The ability to communicate your findings clearly and concisely is also key. Those looking to join Quantitative Solutions will additionally need a PhD or master’s degree in a relevant subject. Likewise, those seeking to become specialists in economic research will also need a relevant post-graduate qualification.
